Introduction
The first time I played Tomb Raider, it wasn’t the action that struck me most. It was the rapid progression of Lara from naive adventurer into someone who is forced to improvise, to ascend, to struggle, to fight and to survive – because the island offers her nothing convenient.
That transformation is what provides this game its identity. One moment you’re prowling around an abandoned building, the next you’re trying to scale a mountain or bargain with a nasty Cthulhu-thing.
What Tomb Raider Is All About
Tomb Raider is an action-adventure game that transports Lara Croft to one of her many adventures that will turn her into the kind of relentless investigator she is over the course of this series. And in this adventure, her plane is shot down on a strange island called Yamatai and she’s the only survivor along with her crew. That’s where everything takes place.
The island is not the set dressing in between missions. Forests, cliffs, ruins, caves, villages and centuries of history are all linked, and in many cases, exploration and peril are in the same areas. Although Lara begins with few tools, she must adapt to her environment to survive, using what she comes across. As she progresses, she unlocks new weapons, tools, gadgets, skills and other items to add to her expanding arsenal.
And that’s where the scale of things begin to really expand. Rather than progressing through a wholly linear set of rooms, you can revisit previous sections, look for collectibles, seek out optional areas, or explore the side tombs with environmental puzzles and the like.

How the Adventure Works
The game combines hunting, exploration, traversal, combat, puzzle solving, and progression seamlessly. As Lara, you traverse the island using your climbing skills, tools, and the environment itself as you encounter hostile factions and environments. There are multiple approaches to combat. You can use your bow for quieter shots or change your tactics on the fly with your guns if you need to get up close and personal.
Movement is also key, especially when enemies are spread out across the environment. However, combat is only part of the game; much of the game consists of navigating your way through the landscape. Whether it’s climbing, rope swinging, environmental interaction, or destructible environments, the terrain becomes something you work to conquer rather than something you walk through.
It’s in the Base Camps that Lara can spend skill points that she accumulates, upgrade her gear, and travel between locations that you’ve previously explored. The upgrade system gives exploration some purpose. The items you scavenge on your adventures can be used to upgrade your weapons and gear, and the xp you earn on your journey will go toward new skills. So, every time you’re scouring a location for something optional, you’re actually working toward making Lara more powerful.

Why the Gameplay Holds Together
Tomb Raider succeeds because its systems are always overlapping. Exploration yields resources. Resources upgrade equipment. Upgraded gear makes some encounters much more manageable. New skills and gear can also recontextualize old environments you’ve already explored. It’s a good cycle. Take the bow. It isn’t just some other weapons in Lara’s menu. It can seamlessly be integrated with your stealth and combat systems, as well as exploration and even traversal in some circumstances.
Rope arrows are able to draw value from the environment in addition to shooting bad guys. Base Camps sprinkle in another element without turning progression into a grind. You’re not stopping every few seconds and trawling through a bajillion options. They’re handy checkpoints for incremental upgrades to the game’s open-world formula, before returning to the action. And then there are the optional tombs.
They break up the pace – after a series of combat or traversal, discovering a tomb can give you a quieter puzzle to work through. Some tombs are easier than others, but may involve using the game’s environment, or the interactions between various objects, in order to succeed. I think that is one of the great things about the game. It knows when to go for it and when to slow down.

Final Thoughts
Tomb Raider is nice and breezy. It doesn’t just blast Lara from one action sequence to the next. The slower segments have weight too.
Exploring an empty structure, scaling a treacherous ledge, locating a hidden tomb, or scraping together enough salvage for an upgrade might make a more significant set-piece that comes next.
And Lara’s evolution provides some cohesion to the whole adventure.
No, she doesn’t come in as an invincible action star. She has to learn. She has to make it up as she goes along.
She has to squeeze what she can from the island.
That is what makes this progression compelling. The fact that there are elements of exploration, climbing, fighting, puzzle solving, collectables, upgrades and optional locations means that it adds a lot more depth than a simple action-shooter game. You can follow the story, meander off the beaten track, go looking for upgrades, or spend some time investigating earlier locations.
Honestly, it is. Tomb Raider still stands up because it is a tight, action-adventure package, where its mechanics don’t feel disjointed from each other, but work with each other. Every new skill that Lara learns has the potential to shake up how you go about traversing the world, every upgrade offers a new reason to keep hunting, and it all clicks when the game unleashes all its powers at once.
